Melbourne Youth Wind Symphony

The Melbourne Youth Wind Symphony offers players of standard
Wind Ensemble instruments with a unique and fulfilling large
ensemble experience. Exploring a diverse range of Wind Band
repertoire, members will have the opportunity to explore a
variety of repertoire while learning the ensemble techniques
required to perform expressively.

The Melbourne Youth Wind Symphony provides symphonic wind training for woodwind, brass and percussion players aged 11 to 20, with a minimum standard of Grade 4 AMEB (or equivalent). Under the direction of Conductor Rick Plummer, the ensemble benefits from rehearsals and tutorials with some of Melbourne’s finest instrumentalists and music educators.

Throughout the year Melbourne Youth Wind Symphony will perform and rehearse at the University of Melbourne Faculty of the VCA and Music, while having the opportunity to perform regularly at venues such as Iwaki Auditorium, the Melbourne School Bands Festival and as a principal ensemble of the 2010 Bands Festival held at BMW Edge in Federation Square.

This year, the Melbourne Youth Wind Symphony will perform repertoire by Frank Tichelli, Clare Grundman, Alfred Reed, Larry Daehn, Malcolm Arnold, William Himes, Brian Hogg, Warren Barker, Sammy Nestico and Adam Gorb.

“The purpose of music education should be to stimulate, nurture, and enhance creativity, imagination, and the expressive spirit of our students. The vision for Melbourne Youth Wind Symphony is to nurture and promote a life-long love for music and the creative process.” Rick Plummer, Conductor of Melbourne Youth Wind Symphony
