1 - Minister DixonMessage from the Minister for Education

Since 1967, Melbourne Youth Music (MYM) has been educating the young musicians of Victoria and preparing them for a lifelong musical journey.  The Victorian Government is a proud partner of the MYM Ensemble Program, which offers 1400 hours of tuition and training to young people aged 8–25 across Victoria each year.

In its 45 year history, it is estimated that MYM has educated 30,000 young people, many of whom have gone on to hold leading roles in business, education, and the arts. In 2012, Melbourne Youth Music celebrates this milestone by bringing together MYM musicians, past and present, in the inaugural MYM Alumni Orchestra.

Melbourne Youth Music is to be commended on its exemplary work to provide young people with the chance to develop their music skills and talents in a nurturing environment that encourages world-class excellence.

Through public performances and weekly rehearsals with specialist educators, MYM ensemble members grow in ability and confidence, and learn valuable interpersonal and teamwork skills. I am delighted that pathways for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, and rural Victoria, are also a focus of MYM programs.

I support Melbourne Youth Music’s exciting program for 2012, which builds on a long tradition of excellence in music education in Victoria.
