Rehearsing a rich and exciting range of string repertoire and demonstrating their achievements as an ensemble at performances throughout the year, members of Melbourne Youth Chamber Strings will develop an enthusiasm for performance and focus on skills that enhance each player’s overall musical development.  Members of this advanced ensemble will be selected based on their previous ensemble experience as well as displaying solid foundations of string technique.

MYCS CONCERTS:
The Melbourne Youth Chamber Strings will present three separate concerts as part of the MYM Ensemble Concerts, in three different professional venues across Melbourne.
MYM ENSEMBLE CONCERTS
at BMW Edge, Federation Square (Sunday 13 May)
MYM ENSEMBLE CONCERTS at Iwaki Auditorium, ABC Southbank Centre (Sunday 19 August) 
MYM GALA CONCERT at Dallas Brooks Centre (Saturday 10 November) 

MYCS SPECIAL PROJECTS:
The Melbourne Youth Chamber Strings will participate in the following extension activities in 2012:
MELBOURNE YOUTH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA (with PGYO Wind Ensemble) at Stones of the Yarra Valley (Sunday 23 September, 11:00am) and BMW Edge, Federation Square (Monday 24 September, 12:00pm)

Mary Johnston studied violin with Peter Cropper from the Lindsay String Quartet and Rosemary Furniss from the Nash Ensemble, St. Martin in the Fields and assistant teacher to Ivan Gallamian.  After majoring in performance and composition at Sheffield University, she gained a Post Graduate Diploma in Orchestral Studies in London working with renowned conductors including Sir Simon Rattle, Lorin Maazel, Sir Charles Mackerras, Sir Colin Davis, Sir John Elliot Gardner, Vernon Handley and Gennady Rozhdestvensky.

After performing with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, The West Australian Symphony Orchestra and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for many years, Mary is now heavily involved with teaching young musicians. She is Head of Strings at Melbourne Girls Grammar School, Musical Director and Concertmaster of the Concertante String Ensemble, First violinist in the Allamanda String Quartet and is currently Concertmaster for the Zelman Symphony Orchestra, Camberwell Camerata Orchestra.  Mary also mentors with the Monash University Academy Orchestra and is Associate Concertmaster of the Tasmania Discovery Orchestra at the University of Tasmania.
