PERCY GRAINGER YOUTH ORCHESTRA

Established in 1974, and named after one of Melbourne’s greatest musical sons, the orchestra is open to talented young musicians aged 12-20 years who have passed AMEB Grade 5. With some 85 players, it is widely respected for an impressive performance standard, and is frequently asked to perform at prestigious events in Melbourne, around Victoria and interstate.

OBJECTIVES
To introduce students to a wide variety of musical repertoire suitable for the overall standard of the ensemble.
To develop the foundation of good orchestral ensemble skills such as;

  • Ensemble precision
  • Orchestral tonal balance between different sections
  • Musical phrasing
  • Dynamic control
  • Relevant technical articulation for the different instruments
  • Constant intonation awareness
  • Concert etiquette
  • The development of the students' knowledge of orchestral repertoire
To provide the students with the opportunity to work with experienced conductors and tutorial staff.
To provide suitable performance opportunities throughout the year.
To provide the section leaders with leadership responsibilities for their sections.
To provide the opportunities for the students to work with visiting eminent musicians when the opportunities arise.

REHEARSAL DETAILS
The orchestra rehearses at the Victorian College of the Arts each Saturday of the school year unless other wise stated. Rehearsals are held from 9.00am to 1.00pm, with full orchestra from 9.00am - 10.45am, followed by sectional tutorials 11.15am - 1.00pm. Absent students are required to notify the manager of their intended absence. Any student absent from the sound check prior to a concert will not be permitted to play in the orchestra for the concert.

REPERTOIRE

EVALUATION
Is done every time the orchestra performs. The conductor seeks comments from tutorial staff and any other conductors present. Performances are discussed with the students after performances.

CONCERTS / WORKSHOPS / TOURS / CAMPS
These are planned by the administration in conjunction with the conductor. (Also see Concerts/Events Calendar, Tours and School Workshops/Performances)

AUDITIONS
Are held each year in late January or early February. All returning students must re-audition for the opportunity to remain in the orchestra for the coming year. Auditions are held for new students throughout the year as vacancies occur.
